Syma 3 Channel S013 Mini Infrared Black Hawk RC Helicopter

The Syma S013 is very small and light; apparently it won't tolerate a breeze outdoors. The controller takes 4 AA batteries. The controller plugs into the helicopter to charge it. You get about 5 to 10 minutes of flying time for 10 to 20 minutes of charging time. The aircraft body is a solid plastic with flexible rotor blades with balance bar. The blades give the helicopter stable flight and lift. Flashing red and blue lights give the aircraft an in flight appearance of an emergency vehicle but do not appear to appreciably reduce the flight time.

3.7V Li-polymer Battery for SYMA S107 Original Factory Replacement Part S107G-19

This battery can perform some experiments with increasing my flying time. This worked great. I now average about 15-16 minutes flying time; this modification is safe and easy. This is because these cells use safety circuits to limit over discharge and over charge. There are a few precautions though:

1. Use two batteries of equal age. This means a new battery in a new helicopter and a new replacement battery, or two new replacement batteries. Do not mix a new replacement battery with an old, worn out battery.

2. Use two batteries of equal charge - preferably discharged. This is not critical, but it is better to start with two discharged batteries so they don't have any significant energy if you accidentally short something. Also, it just keeps everything in better balance from the start.

3. Hook up the batteries in parallel - red to red and black to black. This doubles the battery capacity and increases the flying time. If you hook them up in series (end to end), you will double the voltage, which will burn out the motors if it doesn't fry the helicopter's circuit board (and you won't be able to charge them anyway).

This is how you make the modification. First, the new battery is probably fully discharged, so fly your helicopter until the battery is discharged (unless you are using two new cells). Then splice the new battery in parallel with the battery in the helicopter. I found it easiest to just cut out the existing battery, leaving about equal lengths of red and black wire. Then I trimmed the wires on the new battery to the same length. I then stripped and tinned all the wire ends. I then soldered the two batteries together, red to red and black to black. Using the double sided tape that held in the old battery, I stuck them together. I then slid some heat shrink over the wires coming from the helicopter. I then lap soldered the battery wires to the helicopter wires, red to red and black to black. I then slid up the heat shrink over the solder joint and shrunk it. You could also wrap the wires together and cover them with tape, but that is probably harder in the limited space, and they won't hold as well as solder. Then I removed the weight taped in the nose of the canopy. Finally, you just locate the battery over the battery holder (see photo) and slide on the canopy - it's a snug fit, so there is no need to tape down the battery.

It has some serious lift; blows a crazy downwind, magazines and newspapers will fly around. It'll carry a weight of two spoons under it, impressive I think. It will take off real quick if you go full throttle. And it's surprisingly precise, I can regularly land it in about a 2x2 foot square.

It's also very durable, I have beaten the crap out of it running into stuff, and it fell from almost power line height outside and didn't break.

It marks things a little bit if you run into the walls, but rarely. If you have pure white walls you might see a few black marks, but I haven't seen much.

Charges in about 30 minutes, flies for about 10 minutes.

Pros:

1. A heck-of-a-sturdy heli. Of course if you bang it on the wall and step on it or something, don't be foolish and expect it to work. But, seriously, it has been through a lot and takes a licking and keeps on ticking!!

2. Once trimmed, it is rock stable. Its hovering capacity is unbelievable.

3. Charges via USB, with "charged" indicator.

4. Has a decent flying time of about 10 mins per charge.

5. Trimming is easy enough for an 8-year old. Just let it fly a few feet above the ground - keep it powered EVENLY, maintaining a steady height - and adjust the trim button until it is not going in circles as it hovers. You will almost never have to trim it again.

Cons:

1. Of course cannot fly outside. Indeed, we tried it. It just got carried away by the breeze, BUT as long as it was within power range it flew naturally, although we had to run after it to get it back. FYI, this thing generates a stiff breeze, and it hurts -Really- if it chips your body.....!
